Watergate Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The first and earliest was the Watergate scandal which took place in the 1970's. June 17, 1972 was when the Watergate scandal began with the arrest of five men very early that mourning. They tried to break into the Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate office in building in Washington D.C. The first charges were made against the five burglars and two more men who were associated with the crime. Those two men were James W. McCord, and G. Gordon Liddy. They were the head of Nixon’s committee for re-election. Those seven men were accused of burglary, conspiracy, and wire-tapping. District Court Judge John J. Sercia, only four months later, sentenced them to prison. At first there wasn’t any signs that the White House was involved, until James McCord wrote a letter to the District Court Judge. In the letter McCord claimed that there were many more involved in the scandal, but due to political pressure it forced many of the defendants to plead guilty and remain silent.
