Famous Horses of the Civil War Horses were essential to the civil war. They carried soldiers into battle, pulled the artillery wagons, pulled the ambulance and also the supply wagons. Many horses were lost during the war, at one point in the war, more horses than men were being killed. Many generals were greatly attached to their mounts, the most famous pair being General Lee and Traveller. Also General Jackson was fond of his mount Little Sorrel, General Sheridan had a strong bond with his mount Winchester and General Grant thought that his horse Cincinnati was “the finest horse he had ever seen”. Traveller is considered the most famous horse in American history (www.bbc.co.uk). He was owned by General Robert E. Lee, who bought Traveller in 1861 for two hundred dollars. The horse was gray with black points, a long mane and tail, and he stood 16 hands tall.
