Deforestation is the destruction of rainforests and woodlands. They have been reduced in number by 4/5. Only 21%of the earths land surface is covered by rainforests. It is a major issue that all countries throughout the world need to deal with. Over 12 million hectares of forest woodlands are disposed of yearly. By that rate, nearly all of the worlds rainforests will be gone by 2050. This may not seem like an important issue, but up to 90% of all organisms can live only in the rainforest. That is 50 million creatures. Also, 25% of our medicine originates in the rainforest. Deforestation not only harms animals, but us too.
Deforestation is caused by many factors. Forests are cut down to make room for agricultural land to feed a growing population. Cash Crops and cattle ranching earn more money for the countries than rainforests, so they choose to cut down forests. Trees are cut down for commercial logging, firewood, and building material.
