Potassium (K) is one of the three major or macronutrients required for plant growth and development. Potassium is used in large quantities by plants and can subsequently affect plant vigor, yield and quality when it is deficient. Unfortunately the incidence of potassium deficiency can cause a major soil problem in Australia, and because of this potassium containing fertilizers in Australia is increasing as both crop and pasture yields increase. It has been estimated that the use of potassium has doubled in Australia in the past fifteen years perhaps in response to other fertilizers including that of nitrogen. Much of the growth in demand for potassium has been in dairy pastures to balance increased nitrogen inputs, allowing higher yields and milk production to be achieved and sustained. Potassium is quite abundant in soils typically ranging from 0.5 to 4.0% (Anon, 1999), however usually less than 1% of this is readily available for plant uptake.
