This essay will focus upon studies of both short/long term aid and longer term investment in Africa and Asia, which have been used to help countries recover from disaster and progress in development. It will examine their level of success and analyse the extent to which they help countries progress. It will further include a series of tables and maps analysing the locations where most aid is received, and which donor countries contribute.
Aid can be defined as a transfer of resources between rich and poor countries, in the form of food supplies or money. There are two types of aid, official and voluntary. Official aid is paid by taxpayers in the donor countries to fund development of poor nations. The second type of aid is voluntary, where money is raised by organisations which tend to be small, yet sustainable. Aid is one of only a few possible solutions to help aid countries following a disaster.
