Portrait of a marriage in in Virginia Woolf’s « To The Lighthouse » Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The family is an essential element for a child because it is what surrounds him during more than fifteen years of his life. Then he will grow up and during his adolescence break progressively away from it and more especially from his parents. This detachment usually happens little by little. However, in certain circumstances, for example in case of the death of one parent the gradual process of separation is broken. This is what happened to the author of “To the Lighthouse”, Virgina Woolf, when she was thirteen years old, with her mother’s death. The consequences were tragic for Woolf since this death triggered a nervous breakdown, which unfortunately was the first of a long series. When she was twenty two, her father’s death distressed her painfully too. Even after their death, Virginia’s parents were still largely present in her mind, even occasionally all too present. She is aware of this and in her diary she writes: “I used to think of him [father] & mother daily; but writing The Lighthouse laid them in my mind.
