During the mid 90s, papaya farmers in Hawaii were in a crisis. An insect borne virus had had threatened to destroy Hawaiis second largest fruit crop. They attempted to produce virus-resistant papaya, but the traditional method was not working, so, they turned to genetic engineering.
The experiments were a success, by 1998, Hawaiian farmers were planting papaya whose seeds were virus resistant.
This is just one example of how Genetic engineering can help people.
So what exactly is genetically engineered foods? Well, it is when the genetic makeup of a crop is altered to produce a crop with a desirable trait, in the case mentioned above, the desirable trait was the papayas being resistant to viruses.
Genetically engineered foods are produced by recombinant DNA. Recombinant DNA is a process by which segments of DNA are spliced into the chromosomes of an organism of a different species. The DNA becomes part of the species genetic makeup.
