How does Shakespeare create our view of Pertruchio? Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Pertruchio is a gentleman from Verona. He has come to Padua in order to ‘wive and thrive’. He wishes to find a woman with a big dowry and marry her whether he loves her or not. He is a difficult character to interpret because he is perceived to be loud and eccentric when we first meet him. We are bombarded with his overbearing personality. He is quick to anger, but also quick to laugh, as he displays in his frequent quarrelling with his servant Grumio. Pertruchio asks Grumio to knock on Hortensio’s door, but instead Grumio, rather comically knocks on his face. Pertruchio loses his temper and makes a scene of yelling, scolding and hitting, to me this is an over the top action and further proves that Pertruchio is a bit of a cruel and selfish person. He has a coarse personality, but he is educated and has a quick wit. Also, he loves money above all else, which would explain his great enthusiasm for wanting to court Katherine.
