Rhodes 1 An End to the Atlantic Slave Trade The Atlantic Slave Trade represents the largest demographic passage of a people from one continent to another. From the 16th to the 19th centuries, European traders worked in partnership with coastal African chiefs exchanging manufactured goods for Africans to become slaves that would support the plantation system they favored. Before this Triangular Trade between Europe, Africa, and the Americas, the Middle Ages had led Europe to dismiss slavery, claiming it to be morally wrong. Of three attempts, Europe first sought to use the people Christopher Columbus found in the Americas as a labor force for their extensive areas of land set aside for export-oriented crop cultivation. However, these people knew their American land well and escaped Europe’s enslavement in a short time. Europe then turned to its own people establishing a peasantry with contracts instead of slavery.
