The Narrative of the life of Frederick Douglass Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Frederick Douglass was born into slavery near Easton in Talbot County, Maryland. At the time of his birth he was named Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey, it was not until years latter that his renamed him self (Frederick Douglass). Even though it is impossible to determine the exact year in which he was born he estimated that his year of birth was 1817 or 1818. Lacking a clear understanding of birth date was common amongst slaves, most slaves "know as little of their ages as horses know of theirs" (p. 339). As a child Mr. Douglas was deprived of the simple support of a mother. Even though his mother was living he rarely saw her. The only time that he could be with herr was during the middle of the night. His mother was barely home during daytime hours because as a slave she had to obey her owner and attend her position in a land that was 12 miles away form her home. Most of her day was consumed of working and getting to and from work. Since she was working all day the only time that she could see her son was in the night.
