The Build-A-Bear Workshop was founded in 1997 by Maxine Clark in St. Louis, Missouri. With Maxines incredible retail experience with The May Department Stores Company for 25 years she had inquired the ability to seek out trends and while partnering Disney, American Greetings, and Mattel. From 1992 to 1996 she held a position as President of Payless ShoesSource, making it the number one retailer for childrens footwear in the world. The following year Maxine created the concept of the Build-A-Bear Workshop, a teddy bear themed experience retail store that included the interactive process of making the plush animals for customers from the age of three to a hundred and three. The concept of the store is to create a interesting and fun environment for families to come and make huggable companions. Since 1997 is has grown from one store to over 150 stores ranging from all over the U.S. to Canada and soon hopes to become international.
