The Awakening: Edna against society Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In The Awakening, Kate Chopin uses clothing to portray Edna’s rebellion and show her feelings throughout the novel. Clothing was very important and traditional in the Victorian society. In Victorian society everything was very organized and proper. There was a certain way that people were supposed to behave. If something was supposed to be done a certain way, then that was how you would do it. Because of this behavior, some women, such as Edna, may feel pressure to obey the rules of this society, even if they want to do something else. This society restricted people, especially women, the right to individuality. This restriction can be seen in the clothing that women wore during this time. One good example of Chopin using clothing to portray Edna’s rebellion occurs when Edna and Adele Ratignolle are walking to the beach. Adele wore all white, including a veil and gloves. She was the model of Victorian beauty. Edna wore muslin and a straw hat, not the normal attire for a Victorian woman. Most Victorian women would wear something like Adele did, what we would call “dressed up,” e......
