Historical Chinese perceptions as presented by Raymond Dawson and Edward Said Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
It is important to understand how China was traditionally perceived by the West, as past European attitudes continue to govern and affect societys view of China today. Two historians share their valid perspectives on these issues. Knowing the Oriental (1987) an extract chapter from Edward Saids book Orientalism discusses ideas such as Western Superiority versus Eastern inferiority, colonialism and imperialism. Raymond Dawsons article Western Conceptions of Chinese Civilization (1963) explores historical European perceptions of China under two categories; that it is either favourable or unfavourable. These perceptions similarly derive from attitudes of Western superiority versus Eastern inferiority and the East-West divide.
