Chapter two of “The God of Small things” presents several types of male control through the language and characters. Arundhati Roy illustrates male control as a power struggle for control over women, sexually and domestically, and how the women try to break free from the male command. This presentation creates an interesting picture of how corrupt and sexiest the male Indian society truly is. One of the presentations of male control is shown through Pappachi’s bitterness towards his wife. When it is said that he “resented the attention his wife was suddenly getting” his arrogance is clear, as he feels he should be getting all of the attention. The word “resented” particularly highlights Pappachi’s negativity towards Mammachi which is reflected when he “beat her with a brass flower vase.” This presents the male gender’s constant need for control as so primitive that it has to result in violence in order to be fulfilled. This also raises the issue that women are more advanced than men as they do not resort to violence in order to fulfill their wishes. Roy continues ......
