Origins of the English Language
The story of English finds its beginning with the fall of the Roman Empire. Beginning in 55 B.C. Roman general Julius Caesar led a series of raids on the British territory as vengeance to the Britons, who aided the Celts in their dispute with the Romans. The Romans eventually began settling in the territory, becoming a prosperous colony and remained so for the next 400 years. Around the year 300 Ireland, Germany, and Scotland began sending groups of warriors to raid the British coast. The Roman Empire continued its decline, eventually being overthrown by German barbarians in the year 410. Their troops were forced to disband, leaving the remaining British inhabitants - largely Celts - susceptible to attack.
Following the Roman withdrawal Britain became weak and divided. Manufacturing declined, towns were abandoned or destroyed and tribal warfare reappeared.
