Existing Gun Laws In the U.S. Constitution, the second amendment states that a well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed (1). There are two viewpoints on interpreting this amendment. After the revolutionary war where the U.S. won their freedom with armed citizen soldiers, naturally the right to bear arms became a source of pride and security for some citizens. The issue of controlling guns arose after the assassinations of the 1960’s and also the increase in violence in the 1980’s and 1990’s. The main point for the pro-gun control side is the actual interpretation of the second amendment. They argue that the Second Amendment was meant to preserve and guarantee an individual right for a collective purpose (3). This meaning, the Second Amendment does not transform the right into a "collective right." They claim that the militia clause was a declaration of purpose, and preserving the people's right to keep and bear arms was the method the framers chose to, in-part, ensure ......
