Womens Lives Throughout History
Inspired by the ideals of equality voiced in the Enlightenment and the French Revolution, women in nineteenth- century Europe and the United States began to demand equal rights (Perry, p. 218). In the United States, the womens suffrage movement first adopted a Declaration of Principles, at the1848 Seneca Falls convention, that stated we hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men and women are created equal (Perry, p. 218). The struggle for equal rights and voting privileges continued, but with the help of feminists such as Mary Wollstonecraft, John Stuart Mill, and Emmeline Pankhurst, women were not fighting alone.
In 1789, French revolutionaries published their Declaration of the Rights of Man. This document was a list of rights and duties that men of the time were allotted and given natural right to.
