The Traditional Family Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In the United States, most people refer to a family unit as a group consisting of the two parents and their children. In this country and around the world, families are centered on marriage. Marriage is a legal relationship between a man and a woman that people expect to last a lifetime, involving economic teamwork, as well as sexual activity and childbearing. In the early beginnings of this country, traditionally, men were the sole breadwinners whereas women were the primary caretakers. With the dawn of Industrial Age, the traditional family has slowly moved away from this standard. As the result of a consumer driven society, many women have to work outside the home in order for the family to maintain the status quo. Today, there is a group of people who desire to change even the definition of marriage, which will change the fundamental basis of the family unit.
