At 29,028 feet, Mt. Everest is the tallest peak on Earth. Every year people climb the high slopes and ridges for their own personal victory. They must go through a process to successfully reach the summit. This process is known as acclimatization. When acclimatizing there are many steps, consequences and benefits during the stages of climbing Mt. Everest. Jon Krakauer, the author of Into Thin Air, explains his personal experiences of the 1996 Mt. Everest disaster. He, like all of the other climbers on the mountain, had to go through the same acclimatization process. He also felt and witnessed the benefits and consequences of getting used to high altitude climbing. Climbing at high altitudes is exciting, but deadly if not performed properly. The climbers must travel from base camp to camp one, then back down to base camp in one day. The second stage of acclimatizing is for the climbers to ascend from base camp, to camp one, spend one night at camp one, then scale up to camp two, spend three nights at camp two, and then descend to base camp.
