The Catcher in the Rye, by J.D. Salinger, is a novel that is widely taught in American high schools, and the novel is the second most taught in America. This novel is taught all over America because of the various themes and the language in which the book is written. Almost all high school students can relate to the language and the sexual conduct that takes place during the novel. This novel is a book in the language of teens, and the book also makes one think. It is also a coming of age novel, which makes it also a widely read book, because it shows valuable lessons as well as taking fault for one’s own action. Therefore, this novel does deserve this standing and should continue to be taught in American high schools. Reading and learning about Holden’s problems makes one believe that it is painful growing up. Through the course of the novel, the reader comes across Holden’s numerous obstacles and his consequences from his decisions that through each obstacle, it is due to the painfulness of growing up.
