The murder of Richard Strout by Matt Fowler is one of revenge. This revenge puts Fowler in a difficult moral situation that is only hinted to by the author. The isolation felt by Matt Fowler during and after his violent act of revenge illustrates that he is a moral human being who justifies immoral acts for the balance of good and evil.
Though murder is an immoral act, Matt Fowler justifies it in this case in the name of revenge and the balance of good and evil. The first mention of this is in the first paragraph on page 100 when Steve Fowler, Matt Fowlers oldest son, proclaims, I should kill him, while standing at the grave of his brother. Interestingly, this is the only appearance of the eldest son in the story. Maybe his disappearance represents the disappearance of Matt Fowlers own morality?
