The most important legacy of To Kill a Mockingbird is it’s message about how best to educate a child. What kind of values does Atticus teach both his children and readers? The most important lesson to be learned from To Kill a Mockingbird is how to bring up a child with correct morals and values. Atticus is seen to be one of the best father figures ever in literature. He strives to teach his children about human nature and the importance of education. He instills in his children three particular values - bravery, respect and tolerance and acceptance of others. He wants his children to be brave not with a gun, but with spirit and courage. He wants them to respect others who are different and accept those differences. Through illustrating how he educates his children he more importantly teaches the readers of the novel the same lessons. Atticus believes education is very important. Through reading to his children and with the help of Calpurnia, the Finch family’s cook, Scout has learned to read and write before commencing school.
