Twenty-five years ago, most Chinese people did not know what Coca-Cola was. Today, Coca-Cola has already become one of the most popular soft drinks in China. This dramatic change has occurred because of cultural globalization. According to Manfred B. Steger, cultural globalization is known as the export of cultural flows across the globe (69). Many people are not aware that the inevitable consequence of cultural globalization is that non-western cultures are gradually assimilating within western cultures. Furthermore, because of on-going technological development, the cultural exchange is becoming more and more rapid. In addition, non-western and western countries are able to reach common understandings about world issues, such as environmental protection. However, because the western culture is very different from the eastern culture, cultural globalization is having both positive and negative effects on both societies; while cultural globalization is helping people gain a broader worldview, it is also leading to social conflict and loss of identity in both cultures.
