Why do people often try to escape their lives when its not perfect? There is a dysfunctional family struggling through the Great Depression in the play The Glass Menagerie, by Tennessee Williams. Amanda, Laura, and Tom all attempt to escape their imperfect lives.
Amanda uses her memories from the past to escape her regretful life. With no husband, because he left, Amanda remembers how she had seventeen gentlemen callers. Remembering those men makes her feel worth something because they chose her. She regrets choosing her husband, when she could have chosen any of the other men. Also going to the D.A.R. meetings help her to escape the feeling that her family has done nothing, and has no importance. Attending the meetings allows her to feel like her family is important and not worthless. Finding a gentleman caller for Laura helps Amanda to deal with Lauras panic attacks when something suddenly goes wrong. Finding Laura a gentleman caller enables Amanda to avoid trying to help Laura. It will get her away from Laura and get Amanda on her own again.
