Diana Kazempoor Mr. Dalin English 3(H) 1 October 2005 Countenance of Pain The means in which parents raise their children has a tremendous affect on them. The measures that a father goes to in the poem,” My Papas Waltz”, by Theodore Roehke, is nearly unbearable for a child to face. An unnecessary beating of a child that is dispensable is portrayed clearly in the poem. The vision of ones time in a lifetime being abused is inadmissible. The agony in which one holds in and tolerates is abhorrent. The fortuitous amount of pain and violence that the child’s father put on him is deranged. The author uses a significant amount of figurative language in the poem, as it says, “But I held on like death, such waltzing was not easy” (Roethke line 3), the figurative language here is clearly perceived. The child’s “hold on like death”, in other words means he is holding onto his life and discretion to live. The phrase waltz is a metaphor used for the fathers beating of the child. His father is drunk and not in his right mind; he is so drunk that he is reeking of alcohol. T......
