Should Drugs be Legalized In a country that lives on the basis of life, liberty and happiness and freedom of thought, it’s no surprise that people have opposing views on issues. They even disagree on something that I think is cut and dry: drug use. The first major banned substance in the United States was alcohol: during “Prohibition” the selling of alcohol was illegal. Under the Volstead Acts, the people of the United States were banned from drinking alcohol. This law did not stop people from drinking as originally intended. In 1920 there were 10,488 arrests and in 1929 that number rose to 66,878 arrests (Kyvig). The people were not obedient at all and the making of beer inside the home or in the woods at night grew. This alcohol is called grain alcohol or moonshine. Bootleggers, however, still provided alcohol to those in need. Prohibition was amendment 18 of the United States Constitution and in 1933 it became the only amendment to be repealed. The government tried to ban alcohol to protect the people from the troubles that over-dosing on alcohol can bring ......
