Chemistry Coursework-Investigation of much copper an anode loses after every 120 seconds of being in Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Plan Aim: To see how the weight of the anode (positive copper electrode) changes over time through electrolysis. Prediction: I predict that over time the weight of the anode will decrease and that the weight lost will be consistent i.e. the mass lost will decrease by the same amount over the same period of time. Because the current will be kept stable and therefore the amount of copper lost should be constant over time. There are a number of variables which I should keep constant to try and ensure reliable and consistent results. Variables such as current, equipment, temperature, size of beakers, concentration, and amount of copper sulphate should be kept as far as possible constant. Justification: The copper (II) sulphate solution is made up of copper (Cu2+) ions and sulphate (SO42-) ions. When the copper electrodes (with electricity connected to them) are placed into the copper sulphate solution, the copper ions will drift towards the cathode (negative electrode). This means that the cathode will gain mass because it will get coated with copper and the anode will d......
