Benjamin Bloom: Mastery Learning Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Benjamin Bloom was an education professor, editor, and a vast researcher who earned a BA and MS from Penn State University in the late 1930’s. His studies on the Taxonomy of the affective, psychomotor, and cognitive domains of the human being are regarded highly all over the world and are fundamentals in all areas in education. Bloom’s concept of mastery learning was actually based on the work and ideas of a man named John B. Carroll. A Fundamental Change in Learning In 1963, Carroll proposed a fundamental change in thinking about the characteristics of instruction when he argued that a student’s ability to learn is a reflection of one’s learning rate. The learning rate is a function of the time one has to learn to the time one actually needs to learn. In other words, if an instructor spends two days teaching simple division (ex. 9/3), one student may learn it, but one may need additional time to reach the same level of comprehension.
