At school, every child had something to tell about his or her father. Something that the other children admired, such as, hunting, playing poker, or driving the county dump truck. Scout couldn’t think of anything exciting that Atticus could do. He just worked in an office all day. When Jem asked him to play tackle football, Atticus claimed he was too old. The two children thought their father couldn’t do anything. Until one day, they were playing outside when a neighbor’s dog, Tim Johnson, came wandering down the street toward them. Jem thought he looked sick and ran to tell Calpurnia, their house maid. When Cal came out and saw the dog, she called Atticus at work immediately. Heck Tate, the county sheriff, came with him. They instantly knew he had rabies. When the dog came in range, Heck handed Atticus the rifle. Jem and Scout watched in amazement. Their father couldn’t shoot a gun! Atticus took off his glasses. He aimed for a minute then pulled the trigger. The dog crumbled to the ground. It was a perfect shot. One of their neighbors, Miss Maudie, told the ch......
