The Merchant of Venice”: Beyond the play. All great writers pull ideas from what is familiar to them, their life, and the time that they have lived through; Shakespeare is no exception as he gives us glimpses into his background throughout “The Merchant of Venice.” Most all of Shakespeare’s books, plays, and sonnets has had something to deal with his life or something that was going on in the world. He incorporated his experiences and feelings into all of his works. Shakespeare’s love was to write and entertain people. “The Merchant of Venice” is no different. In this play, he adds what the world was like and the feelings people gave to one another. This play was very controversial at the time when he wrote it, but Shakespeare had a way to write it as a comedy. In the 1500’s, England started becoming more important politically like Italy and Spain. England’s population started growing rapidly. The Jews were kicked out of Spain in 1492.
