In Nathaniel Hawthorne’s, The Scarlet Letter, Hawthorne uses symbolism to take abstract thoughts and present them to the reader in a concrete form that may be easier to perceive. Symbolism is described as a movement that sought to evoke, rather than describe ideas or feelings through the use of symbolic images. Symbols themselves are described as objects, characters, figures, or colors used to represent ideas or concepts. By exploring the depths of the symbols of the book, such as: The Meteor, Pearl, and the Scarlet Letter itself; the reader can gain a better understanding of both the book and the messages it conveys. When Dimmesdale stands on the scaffold the night of Governor Winthrop’s death, a meteor makes its trail form an “A” in the night-sky. Because Dimmesdale’s guilt has began to overtake him, he immediately interprets the “A” as a sign that he should too bare the symbol of Adultery.
