World War I Divided French and English Canadians Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In 1914, French and English Canadians celebrated the coming of World War I as a “moral crusade against... injustice”(Durflinger 1); but they did not know this crusade would consist of such a large contribution of manpower. As WWI progressed French Canadians became drastically less supportive of the war, as was shown by their poor enlistment numbers. They became resentful at the prejudice and political maltreatment they received from English Canada because of it, which served to divide the two cultures. Prime Minister Borden promised no compulsory military service in Canada at the beginning of the war in 1914 but by 1917 passed conscription, and this particularly angered the Quebecois. Sam Hughes was the Minister of Militia who treated the French poorly within his English-speaking army, and this was because he was prejudice towards their language and culture. The French Catholic Church and Henri Bourassa campaigned to the Quebecois to resist from enlisting in the army as they viewed the English war as threatening the French language and culture.
