The eulogy and sonnet Anthem for Doomed Young by Wilfred Owen uses a variety of literary techniques to evoke emotion and create a powerful anti war statement. It has no set rhyming pattern and is written in standard 14 line iambic pentameter. The poem is broken up into two stanzas, an octet and a sestet making it a petrarchan sonnet. The irregular rhyme scheme and the iambic pentameter set a slow and dignified pace, suitable for mourning. The authors choice in dialect is very informal, allowing many of his words and phrases to act as double entendres.
The tone of the octet is set by the variety of sounds contained within it. Sounds of war and destruction - such as guns, rifles and shells, are juxtaposed with sounds that hold religious connotations such as prayers, bells and choirs. By placing the hellish clamor of warfare against the familiar hushed sounds of a church the reader is able to better understand the battleground and relate the horrendous conditions faced by soldiers.
