Thanatopsis When time comes to die go pleasantly, for kings also died, even if they died many years before they will remain with you and all other people when their turn comes. That is the theme of the poem Thanatopsis by William Cullen Bryant. When somebody dies, the earth claims their body but the soul wonders off on earth surrounded by all the others that died before. From lines one through seventeen Bryant tells how pleasant nature is and how it can brighten life. The best example of this is when Bryant writes, "shudder and grow sick at heart, Go forth under the sky and list to natures teachings"(Lines 13-15). In the first section of the poem Bryant talks about nature and what it does to people according to their mood. In the second section Bryant writes that even after death and being underground, one may be deprived of the sun, but nature will reach out to find the death. This is described in lines eighteen through thirty. The best example of this is when Bryant writes, "the oak shall send its roots abroad and pierce thy mold"(29-30).
