Maria Alvarez was not just any ordinary 17 year old Colombian girl. In the movie Maria, along with her best friend Blanca, strip thorns off roses to make a living. She must contribute parts of her paycheck in order to help her family out. This shows that she loves her family, and will do just about anything for their well being. When she quits her job because of the boss, she lands a job through a friend named Franklin. Franklin is a really nice guy, but in the long run isnt looking out for her. He gets her a job as a drug mule smuggling heroin into the United States. Before she decides that she will go, she tells her boyfriend that she is pregnant and that they need to break up. Juan acts like he wants her but really was just in it for the sex, which we could tell from the beginning of the movie at the house.
