Mary Rowaldson Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Mary Rowlandson wrote a narrative about hardships she faced during her captivity, in a journal. Despite her suffering she thanked God for her life and his mercy. In the narrative, she describes her daily life as a capture. Since she has lost her family and her home, Rowlandson is forced to live with the Indians and must adapt to their lifestyle. The idea of food is constantly used throughout the Mary Rowlandson’s narrative, because she needed it to survive. In the narrative, her views towards the Indian’s choice of food gradually changes throughout her journey, and how it is related to the change in her own self. After Mary lost her family and her home, she had to hide her emotions and move on with the Indians to survive. The Indian’s diet was much different from the whites. Rowlandson hardly ate a thing the first week she was held captive. She described the Indian’s food as “filthy trash”, and she “could starve and die before [she] ate such things” (129).
