It is thought that the author has described the relatively rich English, who stay in the Southern France. The narrator, one of them, seems to be a young man, but much older than the young girl of seventeen years of age. Her little brother, called by a nickname "Hennie", is always afraid of her. Such a subordinate relatonship between the eldest daughter and her younger sibling, in which the former rules over the latter, namely its junior, is well observed in the Anglo-Saxon family, in contrast to that of the French, for example, between Antoinette and Olivier Jeannin, having the same difference of their ages as this srory and loving each other, in the French novel titled "Jean Christophe" by Romain Rolland.
