Differences in Architectural Style in Protestant and Catholic Churches Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
The architectural structures and interiors of Catholic and Protestant churches reflected the two religions differing beliefs and rituals. While the Catholic cathedrals were grandiose and designed to inspire awe of God in the faithful, the Protestant churches were simple and minimalistic and demonstrated the Protestant theologies of self sacrifice and equality in Gods eyes.
The religious practices of Protestants were, like their churches, were not extravagant. During the Reformation, lay religious movements shared a common goal of religious simplicity in imitation of Christ (355). The laity sought a religion that was based on self-sacrifice and equality. One lay religious movement, the Modern Devotion, which was founded by Gerard Groote (1340-1384) in the Netherlands, was a brotherhood that manifested these ideas of simplicity. Members of the Modern Devotion were not expected to take special religious vows or to wear special religious dress, nor did they abandon their ordinary secular vocations (355).
