How does Willy Russell make the opening seem both engaging and dramatic? What qualities emerge as prominent aspects of Frank and Rita and how does Russell establish a sense of anticipation? The dramatic opening begins by revealing Rita’s unique, unexpected character shortly after Frank shouts, “Come in! Come in!” Rita makes a very striking entrance by bursting through the door yelling and swearing, “It’s that stupid bleedin’ handle on the door. You wanna get it fixed!” Immediately, this draws our attention, as it is unexpected for a student to enter this way. To add to that, she is everything that Frank is not: lively, confident and talkative. It is the ‘collision’ of these two such unlike characters which gains the reader’s attentiveness. It is extremely important that Russell constructs an engaging opening like this, in order to achieve the reader’s interest to read further on.
