Why Did Henry VIII Break with Rome?
The reign of Henry VIII had a profound effect on religion in England. By 1531, the King, who was earlier acknowledged as a Defender of the [Catholic] Faith, broke away from the shackles of Rome and declared himself as Head of the English Church. Despite of this, Henry still took Catholic oaths on his deathbed, suggesting that other demands of Kingship forced him into leaving behind a religious system that was of such contrast to his once beloved Catholic Church.
Opinions over why Henry broke with Rome differ, and will no doubt continue to do so. All was not well with the [Catholic] Church in England according to G.R Elton , believing the anti clerical feelings of the public to be the dominant factor behind Henrys decision. This probably agrees with the general opinion of the 16th Century, as little was known about the private issues that the King was struggling with.
