TRANSFORMATION: Transformation involves taking themes and ideologies from an original text and finding parallels to suit a new context. THEMES: Emma, a novel by Jane Austen written in 1815 is a novel of social criticism. Personal worth and social acceptance in Emma’s society is valued on money and family history. Social acceptance clearly seen in the matches of marriage. Importance of personal worth seen when Emma attempts to raise Harriet’s (an orphan with no money and no known family history) social status by trying to match her with Mr. E. (Mr.E. says in regard to match “ Everyone has their level; but as for myself, I think, I am not so much at a loss.”) Social and moral responsibility is a theme in both texts values of each society vary in this area, e.g. in Emma Frank Churchill does not act in a way that is acceptable in Emma’s society, he deceives everyone making them believe he is interested in a marriage between himself and Emma while the whole time he is engaged to Jane Fairfax.
