The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien was fairly easy to understand. The author used imagery, the structure of the story, and the theme to help the reader better understand the main point of the story; which is, emotional stress can be just as hard on a soldier as physical stress. Tim O’Brien uses imagery throughout the story to describe situations and the attitude of the soldiers. He uses visual imagery to describe the setting, for example, when Jimmy Cross is daydreaming about being on the Jersey shore with Martha O’Brien writes the sun, waves, and gentle winds. Another example from the story where there is visual imagery is when Kiowa describes how Ted Lavender falls after he was shot. He compares it to a rock falling or a big sandbag. Another type of description used in the story is tactile imagery. An example of this is when O’Brien writes “They carried all the emotional baggage of men who might die” he then goes on to describe the types of feelings they carried such as grief, terror, and love.
