Henderson the Rain King Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In the novel Henderson the Rain King, Saul Bellow tells of a man on a quest for knowledge of self and purpose in his middle aged life. Eugene Henderson runs away from his life to Africa, trying to make sense of his troubled life and past. Along his journey he is able to learn from many different people and situations, and relate them to problems he has had back in America. He gets to experience two African tribes; the Arnewi and the Wariri, although vastly different both give Henderson amazing insight into his own life as well as the world around him. The first tribe that Henderson encounters on this journey is the Arnewi tribe. Henderson is very optimistic when he first meets the Arnewi people saying, “I have a hunch that this spot is going to be very good for me” (Bellow, 47). Warm and welcoming, the tribe’s people receive the outsider and show Henderson great hospitality. The Arnewi people are kind, peaceful, some what troubled people that are very dedicated to their community and their prized cattle.
