“The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time” might be described as a metafictional or self-reflective text. Discuss this statement. In “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time,” Mark Haddon uses metafictive devices and aspects of self-reflection to help explain his story. The novel is metafictional in that it is fiction about fiction; the book is about a boy – Christopher John Francis Boone – writing a book. Woven throughout the tale are Christopher’s explanations and justifications of his behavioural traits, all of which are required by Christopher to help maintain a sense of normalcy and routine. Christopher justifies his actions not only to the reader but to himself, and we are able to see this as a form of Christopher’s own self-reflection. Christopher decides to write about the mysterious death of his neighbour’s dog, Wellington, because it was an event that he experienced. We learn early in the novel that he is incapable of lying.
