Enlightenment Philosophers Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Two of England’s most important enlightenment philosophers were Thomas Hobbes and John Locke. Both of these men were great thinkers that had different thoughts on the human nature and how the government should work. As believed by Thomas Hobbes, people were supposedly “naturally bad” and if they weren’t under law by the government he believed that people would take matters into their own hands and fight amongst themselves. This is why Thomas Hobbes still believed in the monarchy which would limit the power of its citizens. He published his thoughts in a literary worked which he titled Leviathan. The difference of John Locke’s views with Thomas Hobbes’ views was that he had a thought that instead of people being naturally bad and having to be ruled by the government, he thought that people were “naturally good” and that people had “natural rights” when they were first born. With these thoughts in mind, John Locke believed that the most efficient government was one that was limited in power and was chosen by its citizens.
