Dispossessed - Philip Hodgins Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Along with the loss of the farm, the four characters in Philip Hodgins’ ‘Dispossessed’’ are dispossessed in many other ways. Some of the most apparent of these is their dispossession from each other, their lifestyle and simple happiness. By the end of the novella, Max, Len, Liz and Amanda are not only physically separated from each other, but also emotionally separated. We see evidence of this separation occurring constantly throughout the text as the characters grow further and further apart. Liz and Len fail to communicate with each other; Liz cannot understand why Len displays their eviction notices for all to see, and Len undermines Liz’s decisions. An example of this is when Liz urges Amanda to hurry up or risk being late to school. Len simply states “We’ll drive her.” Without even realizing, he demoralizes Liz. It is clear that once there must have been love holding the family together, but the circumstances and stress wear away at this love until there is nothing left, and the family disbands. We are never informed of Liz’s plans to take Amanda and leave......
