Salem Trials Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In 1692 there were false accusations roaming the streets of Salem, Massachusetts. It is said that a group of young girls accused other innocent girls of being witches. It was not long until the innocent girls were tried in court. Nineteen were hung, one man was pressed with weights, and the rest were left to die in prison. The strange and interesting thing about this absurd trial is that the ones who pleaded guilty were released. Realizing this made many of the accused ones give in. There were some that refused just because it would be against their religion to tell a lie. They would rather die innocent that tell a lie and be free with a burden. The odd thing about this situation is that witchcraft was in fact a real problem in Salem. Citizens were practicing it and were not being condemned for their acts. No one was sure who was actually practicing witchcraft but there was no doubt about it that it was only superstition.
