Newton's Third Law of Motion Before any plane gets off the ground, Newton's Third Law of Motion - for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction - comes into play. There are four major forces involved in flight that demonstrate Newton's third law. They are thrust, lift, gravity, and drag. Gravity is the force that lift has to overcome in order to get a plane off the ground. Thrust has two purposes. One purpose is to act as a balance for the force of drag, so the plane can make forward progress just as an automobile does. Thrust also creates the conditions whereby air moves over the wings to produce lift. Airplanes need forward motion to fly, and an engine supplies the needed push or pull. The Longer Path Explanation What is it? The Longer Path explanation holds that the top surface of a wing is more curved than the bottom surface. Air particles that approach the leading edge of the wing must travel either over or under the wing.
