Suppression of Women in “The Yellow Wallpaper” “The Yellow Wallpaper” is a statement written on the role of women in the 1900s. It is about how women were suppressed by societal standards, and religious sanctions, to remain demure and within the domestic sphere. While stifled within the home to cook, clean, and raise children they sometimes lost their minds in their lack of freedom to think, express themselves, and receive credit for their legitimate ideas from the remainder of society. In their lack of acceptance from their husbands, brothers, and fathers, a rise in mental disorders occurred and often was suppressed for the sake of social standing. An infamous doctor S. Weir Mitchell prescribed a rest cure to some of these women to (unsuccessfully) cure their “temporary nervous depression.” As Charlotte Perkins Gilman found herself in no way better from his aid, she wrote this story not to be as a description of a woman’s case, but as a comment on the strangle hold society has on women, which drives them mad.
