West Point? Since 1898, the words Duty, Honor, Country have been the United States Military Academys motto as it trains cadets to become officers in the U. S. Army. Duty, Honor, Country: Those three hallowed words reverently dictate what you ought to be, what you can be, what you will be. This statement by General Douglas MacArthur, USMA 03 on May 12, 1962 in his farewell address to the cadets at the United States Military Academy exemplifies the mission and spirit of West Point. Graduates of the Military Academy have served with distinction in every war in which our nation has fought. Their sacrifices are written in blood from Gettysburg and Shiloh to the beaches in Normandy and the jungles of Vietnam. West Point, or USMA, is the top one among four Military Academies around the world. However, before West Point was a Military Academy it was a military post.
